That's right, ladies and gentlemen, our esteemed colleague and Assemblyman earns $132K because he "knows a lot of people"! That's not all! He also sees to it that "broken bathroom fans" are fixed AND he resolves complaints about grades. WOW! How can he possibly do ALL of that? Are there enough hours in the day for the roving Ombudsman to manage issues "that assist in meeting the college's vision, mission, values and goals" while taking care of leaking boilers?
Wait, there is more. He teaches ONE class per semester, for overload pay, while juggling the time consuming and challenging task of getting the land-donor's attorney to meet with the county attorney. That must have taken weeks, no, months to facilitate.
Thank you, Assemblyman, no longer will I think that you are being rewarded $132,00 a year plus overload pay to just show up one day per week. I will know that you are a dedicated, hard-working knower-of-lots-of-people who can roll up his sleeves with the HVAC crew as well as rub elbows with counsel. Truly a man of the people!

I'll tell you what....I really need some ins with video production people.
In the next few months, I will be sending out letters etc, please read them!
I need all the support I can garner, this will be a tough fight, but a WIN-able fight. We need change!

Excellent. Best of luck, Suzanne!
Perhaps you can find out who produced the short film that we saw at today's colloquium. A more inspiring piece I have never seen...blaaaap!

The "quiet" has me concerned...are we smelling another Middle States lull? We are heading into our 5 year self review, no? After they get the reaccreditation, then we get slammed again...

Ah, good to see some familiar names and to "hear" from them again. It's been far too quiet.

WM, you make me laugh! That's what keeps us all going...and going...and going...
Good advice, Been Here Done That...

I know that I have been doing a lot of hand-wringing lately, but that post was not by me. I have been trying to lay low just above the slithering from the Admin building...

You're right, WM--sometimes it's easy to let the B's get ya down. Maybe the new semester and year will be better.

To the individual who posted on 1/11/08 @8:28PM, but did not use a "blog name," and to all the truth believers who read this site:" Illegitimi non carborundum." If your Latin is rusty, Wikipedia will assist you. It's a brave New Year Year; keep the faith.

Citizen Sane,
Thanks for the reference you posted on 1/10/08.
Quite interesting info.

Me too. Is anything brewing or is everyone just tired of the frustrating fruitless fighting to improve things? As our colleagues are either forced out (and replaced by a new crop of content young faculty) or beaten down into submission, there seems to be a deathly and deafening silence and acceptance of the status quo.

If I recall correctly, the planetarium closes at the end of December. If you've never been, you should go catch a a show before they're gone.

Unfortunately, search committees aren't the only examples of "expertless" committees. I know a number of recent planning and organizational committees have excluded or at least marginalized the very people who are most knowlegeable on the subject at hand, as well as those who have the most vested interest in the outcome.
I've seen firsthand, rooms full of those who know nothing about a subject making decisions that will affect the college for years to come, all while the resident experts are blatently excluded from the procedings.

PS: If the adjuncts aren't qualified for full time jobs, why the hell are they teaching here?
Posted by: | December 16, 2007 at 10:06 AM
well,on a positive (?) note I know that search committees at least in humanities, soc. sci., and english are being revamped and won't be able to be as subjective and political but we'll see when the new hires are announced and if any qualified internal candidates are even considered for open positions by larson.if some of our good adjuncts are passed over in favor of outside hires it is not right.

The administration does not care about credentials, the only qualification is to follow orders. Yes, it is a disgrace.
Posted by: | December 15, 2007 at 07:26 PM
Yes, they seem to like committees that lack the individuals who are the experts in the field.

Congrats, Viking News, on another great issue! Suzanne, you're doing a terrific job. I especially liked the column about the chemistry department search committee minus a full time tenured chem professor with a Ph.D. An adjunct on it? Disgraceful but predictable. It never stops.
