Frank Wetta resigned from his position as Vice President of Academic Affairs today. He will be a full-time faculty member at Kean University teaching in the history department beginning in September.
The ratio of full-time to part-time faculty is abysmally low, 22% (thank you VN!), many adjuncts are teaching subjects in which they did not major, and the overall lack of "community" and collegiality at OCC is apparent. Wetta did nothing to make faculty performance better. He was more concerned with beating the rank-and-file down so that no one would question any decisions that were made. His bumbling Inspector Clouseau routine to Larson's Mussolini was embarrassing. This is a man with a PhD who showed absolutely no backbone. "Yes, sir, John". What a sell-out.
Wetta may be the fall boy for this administration, but the plague that has infiltrated our college starts at the top. We can all only wish that he is the tip of the iceberg. Miss Manners...are you starting to sweat? You are pushing 70 years old, so you are set for life even if you are forced out soon. Rest well, upper-level administrators, we will be standing on the side-line cheering every departure. Good riddance.

OCC journalism teacher to retire
http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008807080371
"Tara Kelly, vice president of college advancement and a spokeswoman for OCC, declined Monday to discuss Bosley's retirement. She explained the college does not comment on specific personnel issues."
No comment on personnel issues?? Since when?

It would be valuable to know what the educational background is (Master's or Doctoral) of the other VPs for Academic Affairs at the other county colleges of New Jersey. Since the college's stated purpose is to stress the value of academics and academic excellence in the students' lives, it would be assinine to have the person responsible for those tasks not to be able to demonstrate his/her own academic proficiency and growth.

OBL is exactly right. They can rewrite the job. JL has an ed.doctorate? I don't think that Strada will be there permanently. I think they want someone from outside or else they wouldn't be using a search firm in this process. It doesn't matter who is hired because the new person whoever he or she is will eventually be "chosen" and molded by Larson, be a yes man to him and his Board, and will get the lowdown on the situation at OCC from his persective and so I hate to be negative but I really don't see it getting any better for us. It could even be worse.

It's not unprecedented - Melanie Mackey was the acting VP before Wetta came and she didn't have a Ph.D. And if they decide that wee vee pee dick is the person they want in the position permanently, I believe they can simply not require a Ph.D. in the job description when they do a "search."

Question: how can the (acting) Vice President for Academic Affairs NOT have a Ph.D.? Strada does not have one, not even one of the doctorates in education that our fearless leader has. This inquiring mind wonders what the Middle States evaluation team will think of this fiasco.

What title shall we use instead of "little dean dick"?
How about "wee vee pee dick"?

I PERSONALLY asked Strada, and he confirmed it verbally, all the while trying to avoid me. I guess he really does hate me...LOL!
He is the "ACTING INTERIM" VP of AA

Heard it from an email from a colleague who seemed to think it was public knowledge but I did not see any formal memo go out. .

LAME DUCK/STRADA ?
Where did this info come from?
"June 27,2008 11:05 AM",did you read this somewhere?
WebMaster,do you have some thoughts on this particular Posting?

So The Lame Duck (keepin' it clean, folks) interim VP is Strada? Interesting. He'll probably be in the position for a while considering how long it took to hire Wetta.
Posted by: | June 27, 2008 at 11:05 AM
That does NOT surprise me, afterall, OCC has the highest number of STARS students. I would think that is the smartest choice the governor could have made, since I am SURE he doesn't know Larson intimately!

Did anyone catch the APP this morning?

I had to LAUGH at Tara Kelly practically bowling Erik Larsen (new app reporter) over after the meeting in her rush to get to him.
In case you didn't all see today's front page of the App, make sure you check it out online...Larsen and I are already acquainted.
Also, I was very surprised there wasn't even a nod of approval about the mention of Martha Molinini (the petition signature collector) and her First place in the Beacon Conference. You would think the Prez would want to really hype that up, but maybe it's because Prof. Shiller was MM's mentor, and therefore, that could only serve to make the engineering department good!

Hey S:
You might see one or two of us there.

Hah, guess we've been giving them a break lately!
How about today's meeting? Anyone going?
Posted by: Suzanne | June 16, 2008 at 06:13 AM
Oh, we all know they keep track of the blog, no matter what they claim. I remember a VP specifically telling me they had an assigned person reading the blog on a daily basis.
Jocko: Can you elaborate?

Jocko: Maybe my brain is melted from the heat but plese 'splain!!!

The OCC plumber is retiring, he'll have some time on his hands and he's actually quite distinguished looking. Who will know? We survived 8 years of Reagan, who managed him?

Back from a two week getaway, I was checking out mail, broadcasts and postings. Anyone else notice that there are an unusually high number of statements from McGinty about the programs at A. for L.L. Coincidence that they are being written after all the blog postings complaining about that department's management and performance? And they say no one reads the blog in Admin!! Ha! Have a good summer everyone.
Posted by: PP | June 13, 2008 at 05:49 PM
I know we've touched on this thread before, but it does seem that the OCC admin needs to remember that this is still a
"COMMUNITY" College, not Kean university, Jr. I've been part of other community colleges that remember the community part of their mission and have always been impressed by their vibrancy and strong local support. It's a shame OCC's administration has lost sight of that.

Just surfing the blog after many months and glad to see people are talking again. FNG, yes, we've lost a lot of once loyal ALL students as you point out. I know several seniors who, as you mentioned, don't even bother to sign up cause they are fed up with the program and the attitudes of that mismanaged dept. The powers that be really need to look into this if for no other reason than repairing community relations and the perception of their community college.I think that in the right hands these community oriented programs would be great.
Posted by: PP | May 30, 2008 at 11:03 AM
OCC as an entity does seem to be its own worst enemy at times. A neighbor of mine was very much looking forward to taking courses through ALL. Over the course of 2 years and a dozen classes she had signed up for, only 3 ran. The others were all cancelled. Now she doesn't even bother looking through the offerings. You have to wonder how many others we've lost.
Posted by: Forgotten, not gone | May 30, 2008 at 10:07 AM
wow sounds like a lot of people had problems with cont. ed and A. for L.L. I know at least four employees. But Like everything else at OCC, no one at the top of hte food chain seems to care that the community is getting screwed and its not good PR for OCC either.
